      “You’ll never get away with this!” said Kyler furiously as the guards forced him to his knees before me. I hit him.

      “Shut up,” I said, carefully slotting a silver bullet into an empty chamber. I snapped the cylinder back into my revolver with a click, then cocked the gun with a deliberate movement that had him licking his lips nervously.

      “Look, before you kill me,” he said quickly, clearly stalling for time, “will you at least tell me what this is all about?”

      I fired.

      “No,” I said, as his body fell to the floor, an expression of surprise on his face.
